I have rewritten my own bio more times than I want to admit, and I have sat with plenty of shop owners while they stared at that tiny text box wondering what on earth to type. The pattern is always the same. People treat the bio like an afterthought, then wonder why a video with 40,000 views sent them six profile visits and zero sales.
The bio is not where you tell your life story. It is the two-second answer to a question every scroller asks without realising it: is this for me, and what do I do next? Get that right and the rest of your profile does the selling for you. This guide is built around real, copy-ready bios grouped by the kind of shop you run, plus the format rules that changed recently and trip people up.
The 30-second version Lead with who you help or what you sell in the first line, because that line is what shows before the more cut-off. Put your call to action last. Use the display name field for a keyword, not a repeat of your handle. Then go check your own Edit profile screen, because the character limit is not the same for every account any more. |
The character limits, honestly
You cannot write a tight bio without knowing how much room you have, and this is exactly where most articles quote a number that is already out of date. Here is the current picture, field by field.
| Profile field | Space you get | What it is really for |
|---|---|---|
| Bio | Classic 80. Some accounts now see 120, 160, or 180. | The pitch. The line that answers is this for me. |
| Display name | 30 characters | Searchable keyword space, sitting right under your photo. |
| Username / handle | 24 characters | Your @, your URL. Keep it clean and typeable. |
| Website link | One clickable URL | Your single doorway off the app. Guard it carefully. |
Fields verified against TikTok in 2026. Emoji usually count as two characters each, so budget for them.
Why the limit is 80 is now a half-truth TikTok has been rolling a longer bio out to some accounts, so different profiles genuinely see different caps. Do not trust any single number online, including this one. Open Profile, then Edit profile, then Bio, and either watch the counter or type until the field stops accepting text. Whatever it does is the real limit for your account. Safest habit: write so your first 80 characters make sense on their own, then add extra only if your field allows it. |
The three-part formula that never lets me down
Clever bios are fun. Clear bios make money. When I am short on time, I fall back to a structure that works for almost any shop because it front-loads the useful bit and ends with a nudge.
| Part | The job it does |
|---|---|
| 1. Who it is for, or what you make | The hook that stops the right person. Name the niche, the product, or the customer out loud. |
| 2. The trust or texture line | One detail that makes you real: where it is made, a number, a promise, or a bit of personality. |
| 3. The action | Tell them what to tap. Shop below, Order for Saturday, DM to book. End on the next step. |
Read it back as a customer, not the owner. If the first six words do not tell a stranger what you sell, rewrite them before you touch anything else.

Swap in your own details and check the count on your live field. Treat these as starting points you make your own, not scripts to copy word for word.

Bio formats, ranked
Not every format suits every business. After testing these across accounts at very different stages, here is how I rank them, and who each one is genuinely built for. The rating reflects how reliably the format turns a profile visit into a follow or a tap.
| Format | Best for | Reliability | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who + What + Action | Almost any shop, especially new accounts | ●●●●● | Start here |
| Proof + Product | Anyone with numbers, reviews, or a waitlist | ●●●●○ | Strong |
| Search-keyword line | Local shops and discovery-led niches | ●●●●○ | Strong |
| Drop schedule | Restock-based and limited-run brands | ●●●○○ | Situational |
| Personality-first | Founder-led brands where the face sells | ●●●○○ | Situational |
| Emoji-only or vague slogan | Honestly, no one. Looks cute, sells nothing. | ●○○○○ | Skip |
Your display name is a search box, so use it
TikTok increasingly behaves like a search engine, and a big share of younger users now search it the way they used to search Google. Both your display name and your bio text feed that search. The 30-character display name sits in bold right under your photo, and repeating your @handle there is a wasted opportunity.
| Names that pull in searches | Names doing no work |
|---|---|
• Salt & Clay | Handmade Mugs • Bloom | Cardiff Florist • The Preset Shop | Photo Edits • Nomad | Vegan Skincare | • @saltandclay.co (just repeats the handle) • S.C (nobody can search this) • Official Page (says nothing at all) • Sparkle-emoji name (keywords swapped for decoration) |
The move is simple: brand name, a divider, then the plainest possible description of what you sell or where you are. Florist and Cardiff are words people type. Official and a sparkle emoji are not.
The link in bio, set up properly
A bio that hooks people is only half the job. The clickable link is your single doorway off the app, and the rules around it confuse almost everyone, partly because old tutorials keep ranking in search. Here is the current setup.
| Question | The answer for 2026 |
|---|---|
| How many links do I get? | One clickable website link. That is the constraint everything else works around. |
| Fastest way to unlock it? | Switch to a free Business account. You pick a category, and the Website field appears with no follower minimum. |
| On a personal account? | You have historically needed 1,000 followers to unlock the clickable field. Requirements shift, so check your own Edit profile. |
| Any catch with a Business account? | Yes. It is limited to the Commercial Music Library, so some trending songs may be off-limits for your videos. |
| Where do I add it? | The TikTok mobile app only, under Edit profile. It is not available on desktop. |
| Why is my link not clickable? | Usually a missing https:// at the front. TikTok does not add it for you, so a bare URL stays as plain text. |

One link, many destinations If you need to send people to a shop, a booking page, and a newsletter all at once, point that single link at a link-in-bio landing page (Linktree and similar tools do this) rather than picking one and losing the rest. And if you are still under the follower threshold, a pinned comment with your URL is a decent stopgap, even though it will not be tappable. |
Bio mistakes I see on repeat
| Do this | Stop doing this |
|---|---|
• Front-load the point. The first line is the only line some people read. • Write for a stranger. Assume they have never seen your videos. • Name one next step. One clear action beats three competing ones. • Update it when your offer changes. A stale drops Fridays is worse than none. • Test it on a phone. That is where every customer actually sees it. | • Vague inspiration quotes. Live, laugh, shop sells nothing. • A wall of emojis. They eat two characters each and blur the message. • Hiding what you sell. If it takes detective work, you have lost them. • Copying a big brand. Nike can be a swoosh and a slogan. You cannot yet. • Cramming three CTAs. Shop, follow, subscribe, DM. Pick one. |
The final verdictAfter all those rewrites, the bio I keep coming back to is almost boring, and that is the point. It says who I help, gives one honest reason to trust it, and ends by telling people exactly what to tap. Every time I have tried to be clever instead of clear, the numbers got worse and I quietly changed it back. So do the unglamorous things. Open your own Edit profile screen and find out what your real character limit is rather than trusting a number online. Put a keyword in your display name. Set your one link up properly with the https:// in front. Then let your videos carry the personality, and let your bio do the one job it is good at: catching the right person in two seconds and pointing them somewhere useful. Pick a format from the ranked table, drop in a bio from the library above, tweak it to sound like you, and ship it today. You can always improve it next week. A clear bio that exists beats a perfect one still living in your head. |
