I rewrote my own Instagram bio eleven times before starting this piece, and that turned out to be the easy part. Over the past two months I collected and reworked bios for a wedding photographer, a run club, a fractional CFO, and my own permanently neglected X account, then watched what changed. Some versions noticeably lifted the share of profile visitors who followed. Some did nothing. Two made things quietly worse, and both of those were the clever ones.
This document is the sorted result: 50 bios across four platforms, each written to fit its platform's real character limit, with the exact count printed beside every one so you can see how much room is left for your own details. Copy them outright or just steal the skeleton. Either is fine, that is what they are here for.
The character limits at a glance
| Platform | Limit | Field notes |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram bio | 150 characters | Name field is searchable; up to 5 external links since 2023 |
| TikTok bio | 80 characters | Website link needs a Business account or 1,000 followers |
| LinkedIn headline | 220 characters | About section runs to 2,600; the headline follows you into search |
| X bio | 160 characters | Location and website have their own fields, so don't waste bio space |
Instagram bio ideas (15)
Instagram gives you 150 characters across three or four visible lines, so every word has to earn its slot. The name field above the bio is searchable, which means a name set to something like Lena, Portland Wedding Photographer will beat a clever pun if you want strangers to find you. Line breaks are free and they make bios far easier to scan, which is why every example below uses them.
Worth knowing: since 2023, Instagram lets you add up to five external links to your profile. There is no reason to burn bio characters on a written-out URL anymore.

TikTok bio ideas (15)
Eighty characters is the entire budget, so a TikTok bio is closer to a punchline than a paragraph. Say what a stranger gets by following you, in the same voice as your videos, and stop. TikTok search does surface profiles from bio text, so one plain phrase that names your niche, like car reviews or nail art, quietly pulls its weight here.
Worth knowing: the clickable website link is not automatic on TikTok. Business accounts get it right away, while personal accounts unlock it at 1,000 followers.

LinkedIn headline ideas (10)
On LinkedIn the headline does the heavy lifting, not the About section. It follows you into search results, connection requests, and every comment you leave, which makes it the most-seen sentence you will write on the platform. You get 220 characters, and the pipe symbol is the standard way to separate two or three ideas. The About section runs to 2,600 characters, but I focused these ten on the headline because that is the part people actually read.
Worth knowing: LinkedIn's own search leans heavily on headline text. Recruiters search job titles and skills, so keep your real role in there even when you add personality around it.

| # | Role + type | Bio (copy-ready) | Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Freelance writer CLIENT FOCUSED | B2B content writer for fintech | Long form your sales team will actually send | 60+ published case studies | 106 / 220 |

X bio ideas (10)
X gives you 160 characters plus separate fields for location and a website, so spending bio space on either is a waste. Bios here lean harder on voice than anywhere else. People follow accounts on X for how they think, not for a storefront, so the strongest bios pair one concrete fact with one line that sounds like an actual person wrote it.
Worth knowing: bio text on X is searchable, and journalists, investors, and recruiters genuinely use it that way. A plain phrase like security researcher or pre seed B2B is a discovery channel, not filler.

Five fill-in-the-blank formulas
If none of the 50 fit, these are the skeletons underneath them. Each one is a sentence structure you can fill in without staring at a blank field.

| Formula | Template | Filled in |
|---|---|---|
| Help + method + proof | [who you help] + [how] + [one number] | Strength coach for women over 40, no cleanses, 200+ clients |
| What + where + when | [what you make] + [place] + [next date] | Small batch ceramics, Cornwall, next drop March 14 |
| Personality + niche + schedule | [voice line] + [topic] + [posting day] | Recipes for people who hate washing up, new video Tuesdays |
| Credential + promise + boundary | [qualification] + [what you offer] + [what you don't] | NHS dermatologist, skincare without the 12 step routine, not personal medical advice |
| Project + cadence + invitation | [what you're building] + [update rhythm] + [ask] | Building a calendar app in public, MRR posted monthly, come watch |
Five bio mistakes and the fix for each
These are the patterns I kept running into while collecting bios for this piece. All five are quick to repair.
| Mistake | Why it costs you | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Vague identity labels like Dreamer, Doer, Coffee lover | A stranger learns nothing they can act on, so they scroll past | Replace each label with what you make or who you help |
| Writing the bio for yourself | Your profile is a landing page seen mostly by people who don't know you | Answer one question: what does a visitor get by following |
| A pile of hashtags in the bio | On Instagram they're tappable, which means they lead people away from your profile | Keep one branded tag at most, and put the rest in captions |
| A dead or outdated link | Most visitors click once, and a broken link is the whole first impression | Test every link after any profile reshuffle, on your phone |
| Writing it once and never again | Offers change, events pass, and a bio dated 2023 signals an abandoned account | Set a repeating calendar reminder for every two months |
My honest takeaway after eight weeks of this
The bios that performed best were boring in exactly one way: line one said plainly what the account is for. Personality lived in line two, never line one. Every time I flipped that order to lead with the joke, profile visits stayed flat and follows dipped. Strangers decide fast, and they decide on clarity.
The second lesson cost me more to learn. A bio is not a tattoo. The photographer's booking window moved, the run club changed its Saturday time, the CFO opened two client slots, and in each case the growth came after the edit, not after the original rewrite. The accounts that grew were the ones whose owners touched the bio monthly.
So here is the whole method: pick a bio above, swap in your details, watch the counter so nothing gets cut off, and set a reminder for eight weeks from now. That second edit is where the results actually showed up for me.
