Instagram Experiments With Picture-in-Picture for Reels, Letting Users Multitask While Watching Videos

Instagram is taking a bold step forward by testing a new picture-in-picture (PiP) mode for Reels, aiming to keep users tuned in while they multitask. This update, now available to a limited group, lets videos play in a small floating window even after users leave the Instagram app. As people send messages or check websites, Reels keep running in the corner, just a tap away.

How the New PiP Works

Some users now see a “Try Picture in Picture” prompt when watching Reels. Turning it on unlocks a video window that stays visible over other apps, giving fans a way to keep watching while doing something else. For those who want a break, the option can be turned off easily in the menu.

Catching Up to Rivals

While this is new for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube already offer similar features. Instagram’s chief, Adam Mosseri, has said the team listened to feedback before starting these tests. There’s no date yet for a full rollout, as Instagram is still collecting feedback.

Why It Matters

With so much to do on phones, keeping people watching is a challenge. PiP could help Instagram fight for attention by letting Reels play as users reply to texts or scroll in other apps. This might boost viewing time for creators and help Instagram compete with other short-video giants.

Still Testing

The picture-in-picture feature isn’t on everyone’s phones yet; it’s in the test phase. If the feedback is good, more users may see it soon, changing the way Reels fit into daily routines.
