Google Photos is taking a bold leap forward in AI-powered creativity with the integration of its Veo 3 video generation model. This rollout, now available to users in the U.S., transforms how memories are relived by enabling the transformation of still photos into dynamic, high-quality video clips all through the new Create tab in the app.
The Veo 3 Upgrade: Image to Video Reinvented
With the arrival of Veo 3, Google’s much-anticipated video model originally unveiled at I/O 2025, Google Photos users can breathe new life into images in their gallery as animated four-second video snippets. While this isn’t the first time Google has offered such a feature, Veo 3 ramps up the quality and realism of these clips, surpassing its predecessor, Veo 2, in detail and subtlety. Users simply choose a photo, select a prompt like “subtle movements” for gentle animation or the “I’m feeling lucky” surprise, and watch as the app generates a shareable video.
Powerful Creative Suite in the Create Tab
Veo 3 anchors the newly launched Create tab, which is quickly becoming a playground for visual experimentation. Alongside the video generator, users can:
- Remix: Morph any photo into a new style, from anime and comic sketches to 3D animation.
- Collage: Arrange multiple images into customizable layouts, complete with editing tools like brightness and filters for each shot.
- Highlight Videos: Auto-create musical montages based on smart search prompts (“Paris,” “Mom,” etc.) that pull together related media from the gallery.
- Cinematic Photos: Craft animated 3D-like images to add depth to favorite memories.
- Animations: Easily turn a burst of still shots into playful GIFs.
Accessibility and Subscription Details
For now, the enhanced video generation is free but comes with a daily limit. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers unlock additional generations, letting power users and enthusiasts do more with their media. Notably, Veo3-generated videos are limited to four seconds and do not support audio, and they remain visually and invisibly watermarked.
Looking Forward
With 1.5 billion monthly active Google Photos users as of May 2025, Veo 3’s debut marks a significant moment in consumer AI adoption, as Google brings some of its most advanced generative tools to the masses. Whether animating old family snaps or remixing recent adventures, Google Photos’ AI toolkit is redefining how digital memories are both preserved and brought to life.
