Table of Content
Meta’s Threads is no longer just Instagram’s shadow. In a decisive move to stand on its own, Threads has rolled out a revamped Hidden Words system, letting users curate their content experience with unprecedented precision—and all without affecting their Instagram feed.
A Filter That Fits You, Not Just Instagram
Previously, any word, phrase, or emoji you wanted to avoid on Threads had to be hidden on Instagram, too. Now, Threads lets you build a custom filter list just for its platform. Want to block spoilers for your favorite show on Threads, but not on Instagram? Done. The new system applies your preferences across feeds, search, profiles, and replies—everywhere you might stumble onto content you’d rather skip.
Temporary Filters for Timely Annoyances
Threads isn’t stopping at permanent blocks. The latest update introduces time-limited filters: users can “snooze” specific words, phrases, or emojis for up to 30 days. This is perfect for dodging trending topics or spoilers until you’re ready to rejoin the conversation. Once the timer runs out, those posts quietly return to your feed, no manual cleanup required.
Batch Management and More Control
Managing your Hidden Words is now easier, too. You can add or remove entries in batches, making it simple to keep your filters up-to-date as your interests—and annoyances—change. Threads’ head, Adam Mosseri, says the goal is to give users the power to “shape the experience into one where they feel comfortable expressing themselves”.
Threads Steps Out on Its Own
This update is part of a broader push for independence. Threads recently began testing its direct message inbox, separate from Instagram’s, and now allows users to deactivate one account without touching the other. With every update, Threads is becoming less of an Instagram extension and more of a standalone social space.
The Future Unfolds: Threads Gears Up for Smarter, Safer Feeds
Threads isn’t slowing down. Alongside Hidden Words, the platform is experimenting with spoiler text, new controls for who can quote your posts, and notification muting. Users can now also share links from their Threads profiles and track clicks, while the ability to view and search for fediverse users is rolling out.
As Threads continues to evolve, one thing is clear: it’s no longer content to follow Instagram’s lead. With granular controls and a focus on user comfort, Threads is carving out its own identity—one filter at a time.
