Meta’s Threads has taken another step forward in becoming a more complete social platform with the introduction of image sharing in direct messages. As of July 17, 2025, users in most regions can now send photos directly within private conversations — a long-awaited feature that significantly improves the messaging experience on the app.
Until now, Threads’ messaging feature was limited to text-only communication and heavily relied on Instagram’s inbox integration. With this update, users can send photos by tapping the “+” icon within a DM, choosing an image from their gallery, or taking a new one on the spot. The feature is currently available in most countries, with a few exceptions including the EU, UK, Australia, and Japan, due to ongoing regulatory considerations.
In addition to photo sharing, Threads’ DM system now includes basic features such as emoji reactions, spam reporting, and mute options. However, the platform still lacks some important tools like group chats, message filters, and advanced privacy settings, all of which users hope to see in future updates.
Meta has made it clear that only users aged 18 and above will have access to private messaging on Threads, citing safety and privacy as top priorities. The new photo-sharing feature supports Threads’ broader goal of evolving into more than just a Twitter (or X) alternative. Rather, the company is positioning it as a standalone network where users can engage in both public conversations and private interactions seamlessly.
While the rollout may feel overdue to some, the addition of image sharing underscores Meta’s ongoing efforts to make Threads a more social and engaging space for daily communication. It's a relatively small update, but a meaningful one, especially for users who prefer staying within one platform for all forms of interaction.
With continued user feedback and iterative improvements, Threads seems well on its way to becoming a full-fledged messaging and microblogging hub.
